Another appointment, another update

Today we went to see the perinatologist again (once weekly throughout the rest of the pregnancy). The appointment was pretty standard. It started with an ultrasound with an ultrasound tech, then the doctor came in, did some more scanning and talked to us about what he saw. I must say that of the two perinatologists we have seen, this one is my favorite (and the rest of our appointments are with him).

Overall, he said the left kidney looks fine, the right is slightly larger. She still has the fluid in her brain, but the levels have not changed since last time. Unlike the last peri appointment, he said the amniotic fluid levels looked ok. Nothing new was presented this time.

Interestingly enough, he was VERY surprised that the other peri had referred us to see a neurosurgeon. He then backtracked a little and said it would be good to go ahead and meet with them in case we needed to do anything after birth, but it was somewhat funny to see his reaction. You could tell he thought it was a waste of time (he even said as much). Thank goodness Justin and I have plenty of STD/PTO time to run around for all these appointments!

We asked him about the possibility of early delivery that the other peri mentioned. He again seemed very surprised and said that he sees no need for that at this time. So, it looks like we are back to the original due date of February 22nd.

Another question we had was if the fluid levels look as if they are going to need immediate surgical intervention. Of course he began with the standard, "We won't know until the baby is born," but he also said that the levels are not such that he thinks it will need anything immediately if at all. He did reiterate that we needed to look at all the “issues” globally rather than individually as they could end up being just anomalies or they could be symptoms of a syndrome. Again, we really won’t know until after delivery.

We did find out that our baby apparently has a lot of hair. Guess the old wives tale about heartburn is true. I wonder what color it will be?

We meet with the neurosurgeon tomorrow, but after today’s appointment, I am really not expecting any major news.
